Thanks For Hearing the
ol' Peanut Whistle!

The n9ret beacon operates 24/7/365 from a location just west of Chicago, Illinois. The beacon is controlled by an MFJ 1278B MultiMode Controller, which uses a Kaypro II computer as its' terminal interface.

The beacon runs around 4 watts of output power from a TenTec 540 into an Indoor Spiral Dipole antenna which hangs about 20 feet above the average Illinois terrain.

While reports have been sparse at the bottom of the current sunspot cycle, this little station gets replies from all around the world when the sunspot cycle is more active.

Beacons are a great way to enjoy the hobby with a limited commitment of time and resources, and they provide a valuable service to amateurs around the globe.

Everyone should consider the establishment of a beacon station! It can cost next to nothing to set up and maintain, and the thrill of checking your e-mail and finding another far-away respondent is unmatched!
